Cedar Hat by Brian Wilson

$700.00
Cedar hats are made from cedar bark. Traditionally, it was woven and twined into a broad range of clothing mats, rope, fishing equipment, baskets and a wide variety of other uses. The bark from the cedar trees is pulled at a specific time of year only for a short amount of time when the pitch is running and is harvested in such a way that the tree survives and continues to grow. The inner bark is separated from the strip, and split, dried and sometimes dyed. Cedar hats are incredibly resilient and strong, and many of the more finely twined hats are waterproof. Different nations will have different styles, and traditionally certain styles were reserved for chiefs and whalers.
